A couple asked our Luxury Custom Travel department to plan a romantic journey to South America where they could celebrate a birthday in style. Our travel consultant worked with the couple to arrange a unique journey through Patagonia, the pampas, and the wine country of Argentina and Chile, which you could use as a starting point for your own custom journey.
Santiago, Chile
After touching down in Santiago, the couple spent the first few days of their journey discovering the hidden treasures of the cosmopolitan Chilean capital. One day, they took a trip to the seaside town of Valparaiso to discover some of the fine examples of street art that beautify the city. They also traveled to the famed Casablanca wine country where we arranged for them to visit some of the smallest and most prestigious boutique wineries.
Santiago Art Immersion
Delve into the vibrant contemporary art scene in Santiago during exclusive tours of some of the capital’s best galleries.
Wine-Tasting Dinner
Savor dinner and a selection of excellent wines with the founder of MOVI, the association of independent vineyards in Chile. Learn about this flourishing movement and how it has changed the wine scene in Chile and throughout the continent.
Atacama Desert, Chile
The couple boarded a private flight and headed north to the otherworldly landscapes of the Atacama Desert. After checking into their luxurious lodge, they indulged themselves in the world-class spa and explored the austere beauty of the desert.
One of the highlights of their stay was an incredible evening spent stargazing with one of the expert guides at the lodge. With no light pollution and almost non-existent cloud cover, the Atacama Desert has some of the clearest skies on the planet.
Visit to a High Andean Village
Spend a day discovering villages of the altiplano. Learn about age-old farming techniques in Machuca, admire the local flora and fauna in Putana Vado, enjoy a traditional lunch in Caspana, explore the winding streets of Chiu-Chiu and gaze across the cobalt waters of the Inka Coya lagoon.
Yoga and Biking to the Devil’s Throat
Begin your day with some yoga at the gorgeous Ckepi lookout. Then hop aboard a mountain bike and cycle along some of the most beautiful trails in the region. Pass by Tambo de Catarpe, a former storehouse of the Incas, as you follow an old shepherds’ path past the Devil’s Throat canyon and the Atacama salt flats.
Lake District, Chile
From the Atacama Desert, the couple boarded their private flight to Pucón, and on to Hacienda Hotel Vira Vira, their elegant home for the next three nights. During their stay, they learned about the working farm, enjoyed a selection of delectable farm-to-table food, took hikes in the surrounding park and relaxed amid the stunning natural beauty of the region.
Farm Tour and Cheese Making Workshop
Learn about the organic practices of the farm and delve into the art and science of making cheese with the hacienda’s expert German cheese maker.
Fly Fishing
The area around Pucón is one of Chile’s foremost fishing destinations. Enjoy a morning on the river with one of the hacienda’s expert guides.
Torres del Paine National Park, Chile
From the Lake District, the couple boarded a private charter aircraft for their flight south to Puerto Natales, the entry point to spectacular Torres del Paine National Park. Flying privately allowed them to avoid a commercial layover in Santiago, which gave them more time to enjoy the beauty of the park.
Upon arrival, they made their way to the Explora Patagonia, which is located on the shores of Lake Pehoe in the heart of the national park. Using the lodge as their base, the couple trekked through the mountains, hiked on glaciers, visited alpine lakes and enjoyed the great outdoors—together.
Horseback Riding Through the National Park
Embark on a horseback adventure as you ride across the Serrano Plain, crossing creeks and rivers. Continue along the banks of the Serrano River and the Toro Lake, before returning over the plain, with a full view of the magnificent Paine Massif.
Spa Treatments
Indulge yourself with essential oil treatments at the blissful spa, which also boasts a heated pool, a sauna and several open-air Jacuzzis with dreamy views of the Paine River.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
The last stage of their romantic journey began with a private flight to Buenos Aires. During their stay at the sophisticated Four Seasons Buenos Aires, the couple took a guided walking tour of the many diverse neighborhoods of the capital of Argentina. They sampled delicious street food, visited the colorful La Boca neighborhood and visited Eva Perón’s grave at the famous Recoleta Cemetery.
Tango and Show
Learn about the national dance of Argentina from expert instructors and then enjoy a dramatic performance at a local tango club.
Estancia Day Trip
Make a day trip to San Antonio de Areco to see a working estancia, watch local gauchos round up the cattle and sample the flavors of a traditional Argentinean barbeque.
