William (Bill) Saturno, PhD, is a professional archaeologist specializing in the myths and histories of early civilizations and politics of empire. Bill is a National Geographic Explorer and a former Professor and NASA Research Scientist who has conducted fieldwork on six continents, on the ground and from space, to understand the ideological and environmental foundations of how the great Pharaohs, Khans, Emperors and Queens of the past ruled over their societies. An avid student and scholar of the ancient world, he weaves together data from archaeology, anthropology and history spanning from the jungles of Central America and Southeast Asia to the deserts and grasslands of Eurasia and the Andes, from the ancient shores of the Mediterranean Sea and Scandinavian fjords to those of Pacific Islands and Tierra del Fuego.
Bill’s fascination has always been in finding the human story hidden within the larger histories, revealing the passions and drives of the power players, the daily trials and joys of common folk, or even just the good luck or bad weather that helped change the course of humanity.
Bill holds degrees from the University of Arizona and Harvard. The author of numerous academic publications, his research has been featured in documentary film and television and covered in the pages of Science, National Geographic and the New York Times. Always exploring, he currently lives on the Connecticut shoreline and can often be found adventuring off the beaten track with family and friends. He loves to cook, hike, sail, kayak and scuba dive.
