Solo Adventure Travel: Sri Lanka
A single woman asked us to design a liberating solo journey to Sri Lanka. Although she wanted to travel by herself, she also wanted the safety and benefit of having a private guide. Our Luxury Custom Travel consultant designed this one-of-a-kind trip that you could use as a starting point for your own solo journey.
Colombo
The woman arrived in Colombo where she was met and escorted to her chic hotel. After checking in, she enjoyed some time to relax from her travels by the lovely pool and luxuriant garden before retiring to her elegant quarters for a restful night’s sleep.
Plantation Visit
Hop aboard a traditional bullock cart to explore the twisting pathways of a working organic plantation.
Local Market Experience
Accompany a chef on a visit to the nearby pola, or farmers market, where you can watch the locals bartering for the best produce, from sacks of red-hot chilies to sheaves of garden-fresh greens.
Sigiriya
She began her journey by traveling north to the rice paddy fields and sparkling lakes of Sigiriya, home to her incredible ecological resort set amid a private nature reserve. She ventured out to discover the historic UNESCO World Heritage rock fortress and palace, which was built in the 5th century. With her guide, she climbed past the Lion’s Gate to the summit of the fortress and the foundation of the Grand Palace.
On another day, she paid a visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage where she had the opportunity to meet and play with young pachyderms. Later, she also explored the medieval city of Polonnaruwa, which was Sri Lanka’s capital from the 11th through the 13th century.
Night Hike
Accompanied by your private guide, head out at night in search of the grey slender loris, a nocturnal primate that dines on insects and berries in the trees of the lush forest.
Candlelit Dinner for Two
Savor a romantic dinner with your partner as you sip fine wines and sample elegant traditional cuisine from your table for two in a private area of the soothing wellness center.
Kandy
From Sigiriya, our solo traveler continued onward to the former home of the Kandyan kings in the cool central highlands of Sri Lanka. After checking in to her luxury boutique hotel surrounded by misty mountains and verdant vegetation, she took a dip in the secluded infinity pool and reflected contentedly upon her travels thus far.
The next day, she embarked on a day trip to marvel at the Buddhist murals and statues of Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Back in Kandy, she paid a visit to the country’s most sacred religious site, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which is home to a venerated tooth from Buddha himself.
Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve
Join your private guide on a visit to this former royal forest that boasts a profusion of endemic flora, colorful birds and hidden Buddhist monasteries.
Perdeniya Botanical Gardens
Enjoy a romantic stroll through the largest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka, which were created in 1371 and are home to more than 4,000 species of plants ranging from gorgeous orchids to exotic herbs.
Hatton
From Kandy, our traveler hopped aboard a train and rode the rails on a scenic journey to the hill station of Hatton. Upon arrival, she checked into her restored tea-plantation bungalow at the elegant Ceylon Tea Trails resort.
During her time in the cool highlands, she explored a series of incredible gardens, and hiked to thundering waterfalls and pristine mountain lakes. We also arranged a special visit to a working tea plantation where she met the head planter and learned about the art and science of growing and harvesting some of the world’s finest tea. After her immersion in Sri Lankan culture and history, our intrepid solo traveler returned to Colombo to catch her flight home.
White-Water Rafting
Ride the warm-water Class III rapids of the Kelani River as it winds its way through the highlands before emptying into the Indian Ocean.
Aromatic Bath and Spa Treatment
Bring along that special someone and indulge in an aromatic cinnamon, green tea, orange, jasmine or geranium bath. Then luxuriate in a Tea Trails Signature Massage or reflexology treatment from the comfort of your own bungalow.
